WBJEE 2027 is the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination you take to get into BTech, BPharm and BArch courses at colleges across West Bengal. The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) runs it every year. As of 7 November 2026, the Board has not yet published the WBJEE 2027 notice or information bulletin. So this guide uses the official WBJEE 2026 rules and dates, clearly labelled, to show you what to expect and how to prepare now.
Key takeaways
- WBJEE 2027 dates are not yet announced. In the 2026 cycle, the exam was held on Sunday, 24 May 2026.
- The exam has two OMR papers: Paper I is Mathematics, Paper II is Physics and Chemistry. Each paper ran for two hours in 2026.
- There are 155 questions worth 200 marks. Maths alone carries 100 marks, so it decides most ranks.
- Wrong answers cost marks in Category 1 and Category 2 questions. Category 3 questions have no negative marking.
- Counselling runs on your WBJEE rank. In 2026 it had three central rounds, followed by an online decentralised round for vacant seats.

What is WBJEE and what courses does it lead to?
WBJEE is a state-level, offline, OMR-based entrance test for undergraduate Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture courses in West Bengal universities, government colleges and self-financing institutes. Your score gives you one or two ranks:
- General Merit Rank (GMR): based on Paper I plus Paper II. It is used for all Engineering, Technology and Architecture courses, and for Pharmacy at Jadavpur University.
- Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR): based on Paper II only. It is used for all other Pharmacy courses, including Pharm.D.
If you take both papers, you get both ranks. If you take only Paper II, you get only a PMR. If you take only Paper I, you get no rank at all.

Who is eligible for WBJEE 2027?
The 2027 rules will be in the 2027 bulletin. Until then, here are the official 2026 rules.
Citizenship and Class 12 status
- You must be a citizen of India. OCI candidates may apply, subject to approval, but only for unreserved seats in the all-India quota.
- In 2026, you had to have passed Class 12 (10+2) before 2026, or be appearing in it in 2026.
Age limit
- For 2026, the lower age limit was 17 years as of 31 December 2026. That meant being born on or before 31 December 2009.
- There is no upper age limit for the exam.
- Marine Engineering is the exception. Its upper age limit was 25 years as of 31 December 2026.
Class 12 marks needed for admission
| Course | Class 12 rule (2026 bulletin) |
|---|---|
| Engineering and Technology (general rule) | At least 45% in three eligible subjects taken together (40% for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD), as per AICTE |
| Pharmacy | Physics, Chemistry and Maths or Biology, with at least 45% together (40% for reserved categories) |
| Architecture | 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths together, 50% overall, and a valid NATA score |
| Marine Engineering | 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths together, and 50% in English in Class 10 or Class 12 |
| All courses in West Bengal | Pass in English with at least 30% |
Some universities set higher bars. For example, the 2026 bulletin says Jadavpur University wanted at least 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Maths together, and 60% in Maths, for General and EWS candidates. Always check the special criteria section of the bulletin for your target college.
Domicile: do you need to live in West Bengal?
You can sit WBJEE from outside West Bengal, but some seats need West Bengal domicile. In 2026, domicile was needed for:
- Any seat in government-aided Engineering, Technology and Pharmacy colleges.
- Any seat in BTech Dairy Technology at West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences.
- 90% of the General seats at Jadavpur University.
- Any reserved seat (SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD, TFW, EWS) in any institute.
- Admission to Aliah University.
You count as a West Bengal domicile if you have lived in the state for at least 10 years in a row (as of 31 December 2025 for the 2026 cycle), or if a parent is a permanent resident with a permanent address in the state. Other students can still compete for seats such as those in private colleges.
Seats through JEE Main
In 2026, up to 10% of approved seats in self-financed Engineering and Technology colleges were open to JEE Main rank holders, under the same Class 12 rules. So JEE Main 2027 registration can open one more door.
What is the WBJEE exam pattern?
WBJEE has two papers on the same day. All questions are multiple choice with four options.
WBJEE paper pattern, as set out in the 2026 information bulletin.
The table shows Mathematics (Paper I) with 75 questions for 100 marks. Physics has 40 questions for 50 marks, and Chemistry has 40 questions for 50 marks. Together they make Paper II. In total, there are 155 questions for 200 marks.
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | 2026 timing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Mathematics | 75 | 100 | 11:00 am to 1:00 pm |
| Paper II | Physics | 40 | 50 | 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm |
| Paper II | Chemistry | 40 | 50 | (same paper as Physics) |
| Total | 155 | 200 | Two hours per paper |
You fill the OMR sheet with a blue or black ballpoint pen that the Board provides. You cannot change a bubble once filled. Calculators are not allowed.
How does WBJEE marking work, with negative marking?
Each subject has three question categories. This is the part students most often get wrong.
| Category | Marks if right | If wrong | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category 1 | 1 | minus 1/4 | One correct option |
| Category 2 | 2 | minus 1/2 | One correct option |
| Category 3 | 2 | 0 | One or more correct options; no negative marks |
Here is how the questions are split in each subject:
| Subject | Category 1 | Category 2 | Category 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50 | 15 | 10 |
| Physics | 30 | 5 | 5 |
| Chemistry | 30 | 5 | 5 |
Category 3 has a partial-mark rule. If you mark only correct options but miss some, you get 2 x (correct options you marked) / (total correct options). For example, if a question has two correct options and you mark just one of them, you get 2 x 1/2 = 1 mark. But if you mark even one wrong option, you get zero for that question. Not attempting any question always gives zero.
Ties are broken first by fewer negative marks, so careless guessing hurts twice.
What does a WBJEE-style maths question look like?
Maths is 100 of the 200 marks. Here is a short Category 1 style problem.
A quick quadratic-roots question solved in four steps.
The question asks: for x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0 with roots a and b, find a^2 + b^2. The sum of the roots is a + b = 5. The product is ab = 6. Use a^2 + b^2 = (a + b)^2 - 2ab. That gives 25 - 12 = 13.
Check: the roots are 2 and 3, and 4 + 9 = 13. As a Category 1 question, it earns 1 mark if right and loses 1/4 mark if wrong.
What is the WBJEE syllabus?
The full syllabus is in Appendix 9 of the WBJEE 2026 information bulletin. The Board says it closely follows the Class 11 and 12 courses of recognised Indian boards. It stresses clear concepts and numerical work.
- Mathematics: calculus, algebra, coordinate geometry, vectors, 3D geometry, probability and more. The Board itself calls Maths the most challenging section, needing strong problem-solving and time control.
- Physics: mechanics, thermodynamics, electrostatics, magnetic effects of current, optics and modern physics, with a heavy focus on numericals.
- Chemistry: inorganic (chemical bonding, p-block), physical (equilibrium, kinetics) and organic chemistry.

How do WBJEE results and answer keys work?
After the exam, the Board puts up model answer keys for a short time. You can challenge a key, or a captured OMR response, online for Rs 500 per question. The Board then publishes final answer keys.
Your result is a rank card with your ranks and scores. The Board does not publish a public rank list, and not everyone gets a rank, because it sets a cut-off rank or score.
How does WBJEE counselling work?
WBJEEB runs online counselling after the result. In 2026, there were separate schedules for Engineering and Architecture, and for Pharmacy.
The four main steps from the exam hall to a college seat.
The flow shows four steps: sit the WBJEE OMR exam, get your rank card (GMR, PMR or both), register for counselling and fill choices, then accept your seat, pay the fee and report to the institute.
What were the 2026 counselling rounds?
The 2026 Engineering and Architecture counselling had three rounds:
| Step | 2026 date (official) |
|---|---|
| Round 1 registration and choice filling | 30 June to 5 July 2026 |
| Round 1 seat allotment | 7 July 2026 |
| Round 2 registration and choice filling | 13 to 17 July 2026 |
| Round 2 seat allotment | 21 July 2026 |
| Round 3 registration and choice filling | 24 to 26 July 2026 |
| Round 3 seat allotment | 28 July 2026 |
The Board later extended Round 3 fee payment and reporting up to 1 August 2026. Pharmacy counselling had its own notice in August 2026, also with three rounds.
What is decentralised counselling?
In 2026, the Board ran a new online decentralised counselling for seats left empty after central counselling. Registration cost Rs 250. WBJEE rank holders got first preference, then JEE Main rank holders, then students using Class 12 marks only. Special vacancy rounds ran into October 2026. See the revised decentralised counselling notice for 2026.
What is the TFW scheme?
The Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) scheme waives tuition fees only. In 2026, you had to be a West Bengal domicile with annual family income below Rs 2.5 lakh.
How should you prepare for WBJEE 2027?
