13 min read
Purple cover with a DNA helix and the title MCAT 2027 Guide: dates, fees, format and scores

MCAT 2027 registration is now open for every test date from January to September 2027. This guide puts the official AAMC facts in one place: dates, deadlines, fees, format, content, scores, ID rules and a study plan.

Key takeaways

  • The 2027 testing year runs from January 15 to September 11, 2027. There are no exams from October to December 2027.
  • The exam has four sections, 230 questions and 6 hours 15 minutes of test time. Seated time is about 7 hours 30 minutes.
  • Registration costs $360. With the Fee Assistance Program it costs $145. Testing outside the U.S., Canada and U.S. territories adds $130.
  • Changes follow three deadlines: 60, 30 and 10 days before your exam. No changes are allowed inside 10 days.
  • Scores run from 472 to 528, centered at 500. Scores come out 30-35 days after your exam.

What is the MCAT 2027 exam?

Quick answer: The MCAT 2027 is the Medical College Admission Test for students who apply to medical school. It is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam run by the AAMC with its test partner, Pearson. It tests science knowledge, problem-solving and critical thinking. All U.S. and many Canadian medical schools require it.

The current version launched in April 2015. In 2025, 96,061 people took it. D.O., podiatric (D.P.M.) and veterinary (D.V.M.) programs also accept MCAT scores, as do some other health programs. If medicine is your goal, read our guide on how to become a doctor. Applying in the UK too? See our UCAT 2027 guide.

Who can take the MCAT?

You may take it if you plan to apply to a health program that accepts MCAT scores, and you are not (and never were) in a health professions program. Otherwise, request special permission in the MCAT Registration System. A review usually takes five business days.

  • Accepted to a program but not yet in classes? You do not need permission.
  • International students face no extra rules. Current MBBS students and MBBS graduates can register without special permission.
  • You need one AAMC ID. Never make a second one. That is a registration violation.

How long are MCAT scores valid?

There is no single rule. The AAMC says schools "generally" accept scores from tests taken 2-3 years ago. Check each school in the MSAR. Every scored exam appears on your score report. You cannot hide one.

When are the MCAT 2027 test dates?

There are 35 U.S. test dates in 2027. The exam starts at 8:00 a.m. unless noted. Deadlines end at 11:59 p.m. local test center time. Dates without a year are in 2027.

How do I register for the MCAT 2027?

Scheduling opened in three groups on October 20, 21 and 22, 2026, by test center location. Now, "Registration is now open for all January-September 2027 MCAT exam dates!" Follow these steps:

  1. Log in with your AAMC ID.
  2. If you need fee help, apply for the Fee Assistance Program first.
  3. Use the free Find an MCAT Test Center tool. No login is needed.
  4. Check that your first and last names match your ID exactly.
  5. Pick a date and center, then pay on the AAMC registration page.
  6. Watch for a confirmation email within 24 hours. No email means you are not scheduled.
  7. Is your date full? Set up an Appointment Notification Request. It emails you if a seat opens.

You may hold only one appointment at a time.

What are the 60, 30 and 10-day deadlines?

There are three deadlines for changes: 60, 30 and 10 days before your exam. Each ends at 11:59 p.m. local test center time. The 10-day deadline is the last day to schedule, reschedule, cancel or edit your details. The AAMC does not grant extensions.

How much does the MCAT 2027 cost?

Table of MCAT 2027 fees: 360 dollar registration, 145 dollars with Fee Assistance, 130 dollar international fee and reschedule fees MCAT 2027 fees in U.S. dollars, standard and with Fee Assistance.

Registration is $360, or $145 with the Fee Assistance Program (FAP). Testing outside the U.S. and Canada adds $130. Rescheduling costs $55, $110 or $210, based on how close you are to the exam. With FAP, the same changes cost $25, $45 or $85.

Change When Standard FAP
Reschedule 60+ days before $55 $25
Reschedule 30-59 days before $110 $45
Reschedule 10-29 days before $210 $85
Cancel (refund) 30+ days before $180 back $75 back
Cancel (refund) 10-29 days before $0 $0

Example: moving your date 45 days before the exam costs $110. Rescheduling and international fees are non-refundable. If you skip the exam without canceling, you are a no-show. You lose an attempt and pay the full fee again to rebook.

What is the Fee Assistance Program?

FAP helps students who need financial help. You need a U.S. home address. Your 2025 family income must be at or below 400% of the national poverty level. If you are under 26, you must report your parents' income. A 2026 award includes:

  • MCAT registration for $145.
  • Official MCAT Prep online bundle and a PREview Scored Practice Exam (you must elect them).
  • One AMCAS fee waiver for up to 20 schools (valued at $1,092).

You may apply once a year, with five awards in a lifetime. Canadian students use a separate program run with the AFMC. Details are on the FAP page.

What is the MCAT 2027 format?

Table of the four MCAT sections with 59, 53, 59 and 59 questions and 95, 90, 95 and 95 minutes The four MCAT sections in test-day order.

Chem/Phys has 59 questions in 95 minutes. CARS has 53 questions in 90 minutes. Bio/Biochem and Psych/Soc each have 59 questions in 95 minutes. That is 230 questions and 6 hours 15 minutes in total.

You get three optional breaks: 10, 30 and 10 minutes. Unused time does not carry over. Seated time is about 7 hours 30 minutes, not counting check-in.

All CARS questions are passage-based, with passages of about 500-600 words. Some questions are "field-test" items that do not count. You get a periodic table in Chem/Phys and a wet-erase noteboard. There is no calculator. So practice mental maths.

What is on the MCAT 2027?

The AAMC splits the science sections into 10 foundational concepts. All shares below are approximate.

Section Main disciplines
Bio/Biochem Biology 65%, biochemistry 25%, general chemistry 5%, organic chemistry 5%
Chem/Phys General chemistry 30%, biochemistry 25%, physics 25%, organic chemistry 15%, biology 5%
Psych/Soc Psychology 65%, sociology 30%, biology 5%
CARS Humanities 50%, social sciences 50%

In all three science sections, Scientific Reasoning and Problem-Solving is the biggest skill, at 45%. Knowledge of concepts is 35%. Research design and data reasoning are 10% each. CARS needs no outside knowledge. It tests comprehension (30%), reasoning within the text (30%) and reasoning beyond the text (40%).

Our AP Biology guide and AP Chemistry guide cover many core topics. For stoichiometry, see the mole concept.

How is the MCAT scored?

Each section is scored from 118 to 132, centered at 125. The total runs from 472 to 528, centered at 500. There is no curve. Scores are scaled and equated, so a score means the same thing on any date.

Total score Percentile rank
490 20
500 48
505 64
510 79
515 91
520 97
525-528 100

This table applies from May 1, 2026 to April 30, 2027, based on 2023-2025 exams. Scores come out 30-35 days after your exam, and AMCAS gets them on release day. Read more on the MCAT scores page.

How many times can you take the MCAT?

  • Up to 3 times in one testing year.
  • Up to 4 times over two years in a row.
  • Up to 7 times in a lifetime.

No-shows count as attempts, including being turned away for a bad ID. For retesters, the median gain was "generally 1 to 3 score points." So aim to take it once, when ready.

What ID do I need for the MCAT?

Your first and last names must exactly match your registration. Make name changes at least 10 days before the exam. Your ID must be government-issued, unexpired, in English, have a photo and a printed expiry date, and be whole.

Accepted IDs include a driver's license, passport and permanent resident card. School IDs and digital IDs are not accepted. If you arrive after the start time, you cannot test. See the ID rules.

How do MCAT accommodations work?

The AAMC gives accommodations for disabilities under the ADA. First requests are generally reviewed within 60 days. You must be approved, and scheduled with Pearson, 15 days before your test. For the Jan 15, 2027 exam, the AAMC suggested applying by Oct 2, 2026. For the Sep 11, 2027 exam, apply by May 29, 2027. See accommodations dates.

How do I pick my MCAT 2027 date?

  1. Note when you plan to send your AMCAS application.
  2. Count back 30-35 days for scores.
  3. Count back again for your study time.
  4. Choose a backup date in case you need more time.
  5. Book early. Some dates run at select centers only.

Book a free demo class to map your MCAT plan with a mentor, or see our plans and fees.

What is a good 12-week MCAT study plan?

Weeks Phase Focus
1-4 Content Review biology, chemistry, physics and psychology. Do daily CARS passages.
5-8 Integration Mix subjects in passage sets. Fix weak topics.
9-12 Full-lengths Sit timed full exams. Review every mistake. Rest before test day.

Do CARS every week. Physics basics like projectile motion build the same habits: draw, list values, then pick an equation.

What are common MCAT mistakes?

  • Booking late and losing your preferred date.
  • A name on your ID that does not match your registration.
  • Missing the 10-day deadline, then becoming a no-show.
  • Relying on a calculator in practice.

MCAT 2027 worked examples

These are original practice items, not real exam questions.

Example 1: How fast is blood in a narrowed artery?

A horizontal artery narrows from a radius of 4.0 mm to 2.0 mm. Blood (density 1060 kg/m³) enters at 0.30 m/s. Treat it as an ideal fluid. Find the new speed and the pressure drop.

Animated worked example using continuity and Bernoulli to find blood speed 1.2 m/s and a pressure drop of about 5.4 mmHg Continuity, then Bernoulli, step by step.

Area grows with r², so v2 = 0.30 × (4.0/2.0)² = 1.2 m/s. Bernoulli gives P1 − P2 = ½ × 1060 × (1.44 − 0.09) = 715.5 Pa. Divide by 133.3: the pressure is about 5.4 mmHg lower.

Traps: the radius ratio gives 0.60 m/s. Forgetting the ½ gives about 1431 Pa. Pressure falls in the narrow part.

Example 2: What is the blood pH?

Plasma has [HCO3⁻] = 24 mM and PCO2 = 40 mmHg. The pKa is 6.1. Dissolved CO2 (mM) = 0.03 × PCO2. Find the pH. Then find it again if [HCO3⁻] falls to 12 mM.

Animated worked example using Henderson-Hasselbalch to get blood pH 7.40, then 7.10 in metabolic acidosis Henderson-Hasselbalch for the bicarbonate buffer.

First, CO2 = 0.03 × 40 = 1.2 mM. Then pH = 6.1 + log(24/1.2) = 6.1 + log 20 = 7.40. With 12 mM bicarbonate, pH = 6.1 + log 10 = 7.10. Halving the ratio drops pH by about 0.30.

Trap: flipping the ratio gives 4.80.

How 1-on-1 tutoring helps with the MCAT

  • One dedicated mentor, live online 1-on-1. Your Asymptode mentor works on Chem/Phys and the maths behind Bio/Biochem: fluids, buffers, kinetics and unit conversions. The plan follows your own MCAT date.
  • Method first. The mentor watches each step of your working, without a calculator, and fixes errors at the step where they start.
  • Honest help on CARS and Psych/Soc. Here the mentor helps with planning, timing and a clear method for passages. It is not subject teaching.
  • Personalised homework with feedback. You get short parent updates, and every class is recorded. Start with a free demo class.

Working with a mentor

How Asymptode can help you prepare

Asymptode teaches maths and science one-to-one, online, from Grade 1 through Grade 12 and for the SAT and AP. A mentor is matched to your child's school year and syllabus, and the class is built around what they get wrong — not around a fixed lesson plan.

  • One mentor, one student, live

Classes are taught one-to-one by a mentor who teaches this subject at your child's school year. They can stop the moment something does not land, and start again from where it broke.

  • The gap gets found, not taught over

Your child works problems in front of their mentor, so a wrong answer is traced back to the idea behind it instead of being marked and left. That is the part reading on your own cannot do.

  • Practice matched to that gap

Work set after a class is written for your child's year and syllabus, and their own mentor approves every sheet before your child sees it.

  • You can see what happened

After each class you can read what was taught, how your child got on, and what to practise next — in your own words, not a mark out of ten.

No score is promised here, and none should be: an exam result depends on the student. What a mentor changes is how quickly a misunderstanding is found and fixed.
