NID DAT 2027 is the Design Aptitude Test that the National Institute of Design (NID) uses to pick students for its design programmes in India. The online form closes at 11:59 pm on 30 November 2026, and the Prelims exam is on Sunday, 20 December 2026. This guide covers the dates, the big 2027 programme change, eligibility, the two stages and preparation, for students, parents and NRI or foreign applicants.
Key takeaways
- Apply only at admissions.nid.edu between 10 September and 30 November 2026. No late-fee window is listed.
- DAT Prelims is a pen-and-paper test on Sunday, 20 December 2026, in 17 Indian cities.
- The Prelims score only shortlists you. Your final rank comes from the DAT Mains (studio test and in-person test).
- At NID Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, Class 12 students now apply for a 5.5-year Integrated M.Des, not a 4-year B.Des.
- Any Class 12 stream can apply. General-category students must be born on or after 1 July 2006.
What is NID DAT 2027 and who should take it?
Quick answer: NID DAT 2027 is a two-stage design entrance test run by NID Ahmedabad for the 2027-28 year. Stage 1 is the DAT Prelims, a written paper on 20 December 2026. Stage 2 is the DAT Mains, with a studio test and an in-person test. It suits Class 12 students from any stream who want a design career.
Five NIDs use it: NID Ahmedabad (with Gandhinagar and Bengaluru campuses), Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. One form and one fee cover all of them.
NID's only official website is nid.edu. Sites ending in ".org" or "org.in" are fake.
What changed for NID DAT 2027: B.Des or Integrated M.Des?
This is the biggest news this year. At NID Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, students who finish Class 12 now join a 5.5-year Professional Education Master of Design (Integrated Pathway). It runs for 11 semesters. It has 15 disciplines in five streams, with 9 seats in each discipline.
The five streams are Industrial Design, Communication Design, Spatial Experience Design, Textile and Apparel Design, and Digital Design Futures. For example, Product Design is in Ahmedabad, Apparel Design in Gandhinagar and Interaction Design in Bengaluru.
The other four NIDs list a "5.5 Year Integrated M.Des / 4 Year B.Des". Their exact disciplines and seats are on their own websites:
- NID Andhra Pradesh: nid.ac.in
- NID Assam: nidj.ac.in (four-year B.Des, intake of 75 a year)
- NID Haryana: nidh.ac.in (integrated M.Des, 6 disciplines of 13 seats)
- NID Madhya Pradesh: nidmp.ac.in (integrated M.Des, 7 disciplines)
Graduates who want the separate 2.5-year M.Des sit a different DAT paper on the same day. So you cannot apply for both the Class 12 route and the 2.5-year M.Des. One more useful fact: CEPT University may use NID DAT 2027 Mains scores for some of its B.Des (Honours) seats, through its own separate application.
What are the NID DAT 2027 dates?
All dates below come from the official 2027-28 handbooks. Times are IST.

With a provisional seat, you must send your Class 12 marksheet by 15 July 2027. Keep your email and mobile active until 31 August 2027.
Your Class 12 boards fall in the same months. Our CBSE board exams 2027 guide can help you map the board timetable.
Who is eligible for NID DAT 2027?
You need to meet both the age rule and the education rule. These rules are the same at all five NIDs.
Age limit (for the Class 12 route):
| Category | Must be born on or after |
|---|---|
| General and GEN-EWS | 1 July 2006 |
| OBC-NCL, SC, ST | 1 July 2003 |
| PwD | 1 July 2001 |
| Overseas (foreign nationals) | 1 July 2006 |
Education: You must have passed, or be appearing in, Class 12 (10+2) in the 2026-27 academic year. Any stream is fine: Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities. Any recognised board works, such as CBSE, ICSE, IB or a state board. You must pass in the first attempt. A backlog, compartment or supplementary result cancels the admission.
If your board is outside India, or not on NID's list, you need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (aiu.ac.in). GCE A levels are listed as equivalent.
Seats and reservation: For Indian nationals, seats follow Government of India rules: GEN-EWS 10%, OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15% and ST 7.5%, plus PwD. In a 9-seat discipline, that means 1 EWS, 2 OBC-NCL, 1 SC and 1 ST seat.
Can NRI, OCI and foreign students apply for NID DAT 2027?
Yes, but the category you choose depends on your passport.
- Foreign citizens apply in the Overseas (supernumerary) category. These are extra seats, about 15% on top of the normal seats. At NID Ahmedabad's integrated programme, that is 15 seats, one per discipline.
- OCI and PIO card holders must apply in the Overseas category.
- NRIs with an Indian passport cannot use the Overseas category. They apply as Indian nationals.
Overseas applicants need a valid passport. They get no age relaxation or reservation, and have their own merit list. They must sit both Prelims and Mains, and Prelims centres are only in India, so plan travel. They also need an AIU equivalence certificate and a student visa.
How much is the NID DAT 2027 application fee?
One fee covers all NIDs. It is not refundable, and bank charges are extra. You pay by debit card, credit card or net banking.
| Applicant | Fee |
|---|---|
| General, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL | Rs 3,000 |
| Female (except SC, ST, PwD) | Rs 2,000 |
| SC and ST | Rs 1,500 |
| PwD | Rs 500 |
| Third gender | Rs 500 |
| Overseas (supernumerary) | US$ 125 |
What is the NID DAT 2027 exam pattern?
DAT has two stages. Here is what NID has published.
DAT Prelims vs DAT Mains at a glance.
The Prelims is a pen-and-paper test held in 17 cities in India. The Mains has two parts: a Studio Sensitivity Test and an In-Person Sensitivity Test. Both are in English only. The Prelims duration will be on the admit card. Only the Mains marks count for the final result.
What is in DAT Prelims?
Everyone sits it at the same time. Questions use text and pictures.
The 17 cities are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jorhat, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi and Patna.
NID's official DAT Prelims sample paper shows the style:
- Short objective questions of 1 or 2 marks: odd one out, cube nets, counting figures, colours, road signs, logos and general awareness.
- Long drawing and thinking tasks of 10 to 20 marks: for example, draw four ideas to settle a neighbours' fight about a tree, draw a juice shop from a crow's point of view, or list user groups who struggle with a sink on a moving train.
What is in DAT Mains?
You must attend both the Studio Sensitivity Test and the In-Person Sensitivity Test to get on the merit list. Details and dates come later.
How are Prelims and Mains weighted?
This is the part many students miss. The Prelims score does not carry forward. It is only used to shortlist. For each category, NID calls 2.5 times the number of seats to the Mains. Your final marks come from the Mains alone. NID will announce the weight of each Mains part later.
For the 2.5-year M.Des, each NID runs its own Mains for its own disciplines.

How should you prepare for NID DAT 2027?
You have about six weeks before the Prelims. Here is a simple plan.
Weeks 1-2: learn the paper. Solve the official sample paper with a timer. Mark which question types feel hard.
Weeks 2-5: build daily habits.
- Draw every day. Sketch real objects and people. Speed and confidence matter more than polish.
- Observe and note. Look at signs, packaging and tools. Ask: who uses this, and what goes wrong for them?
- Practise ideas, not just pictures. Take a small daily problem and draw four different fixes. Label each one in a line or two.
- Do visual reasoning sets. Cube nets, folding paper, rotating shapes, and counting figures. These are quick marks if you have a method.
- Read the news. The sample paper asks about climate deals, crafts and logos.
Week 6: full mocks. Do two timed practice papers. Leave enough time for the long drawing questions.
After 20 December, keep sketching, but give your boards proper time too. For a back-up, see our CUET UG 2027 guide, or the CLAT 2027 guide if law interests you.
A worked example: counting triangles
Counting figures is a common DAT Prelims style. The trick is to count with a rule, not by eye.
Question: A triangle has three straight lines drawn from its top corner down to its base. How many triangles are there in the figure in total?
Count with a rule: every triangle uses the top corner and two base points.
The three lines cut the base into 4 parts, so the base has 5 points. Every triangle uses the top corner plus any 2 of those 5 points. The number of pairs is 5 x 4 / 2 = 10. So the answer is 10 triangles.
Check it the slow way: 4 small triangles, 3 made of two parts, 2 made of three parts, and 1 big one. 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10. For more "see it, then count it" thinking, try our visual proof of the Pythagorean theorem.
What are common NID DAT mistakes?
- Using a fake website. Apply only at admissions.nid.edu.
- Wrong details at sign-up. Name, date of birth, programme, email and mobile are locked forever.
- Thinking a high Prelims score is enough. It does not count in the final merit. The Mains decides.
- Only drawing pretty pictures. The long questions reward ideas and user thinking, with clear labels.
- Wrong certificate format. Category certificates must be in the central format.
- NRIs choosing Overseas. An Indian passport holder must apply as an Indian national.
- Losing the score card. It stays online for only 20 days after each result.
How does NID DAT compare with UCEED?
UCEED is the other big design entrance for Class 12 students. IIT Bombay runs it for B.Des seats at seven institutes, including several IITs. The UCEED 2027 exam is on Sunday, 17 January 2027, and is a 3-hour, centre-based test. Students from any stream can take it.
| Point | NID DAT 2027 | UCEED 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | NID Ahmedabad | IIT Bombay |
| Main exam date | Prelims, 20 Dec 2026 | 17 Jan 2027 |
| Format | Prelims (pen and paper), then Mains | One 3-hour test at a centre |
| Leads to | NID Integrated M.Des / B.Des | B.Des at 7 institutes |
Many students take both. Check uceed.iitb.ac.in for the full UCEED rules.
How 1-on-1 tutoring helps with NID DAT 2027
Asymptode is a 1-on-1 live online maths and science tutoring service. We do not teach drawing. Your sketching practice is your own work. Here is where a mentor does help:
- One dedicated mentor, live online 1-on-1. Your mentor works on the visual reasoning and maths-style questions: counting figures, cube nets, folding, patterns and logic. They watch each step of your working and fix the method, not just the answer.
- A plan around your real dates. Your mentor builds a weekly plan around 20 December 2026, your board exams and any back-up exams, so drawing time and study time both fit.
- Personalised homework with feedback. You get short timed sets made for your weak spots, and feedback on each one.
- Short parent updates and recorded classes. Parents get brief progress notes, and every class is recorded so you can rewatch a method. Start with a free demo class.
If you are unsure how much help you need, read how many hours of maths tutoring per week make sense, or why one-on-one tutoring works.
