GMAT vs GRE is the first big choice for many MBA and business master's applicants. Many schools accept both, but they feel very different on test day. This guide compares them using official GMAC and ETS pages, then helps you pick.

Key takeaways

  • The GMAT exam has three 45-minute sections (Quant, Verbal, Data Insights) and lasts 2 hours 15 minutes.
  • The GRE General Test lasts about 1 hour 58 minutes, with one essay, two Verbal sections and two Quant sections.
  • GMAT Quant has no calculator; the GRE gives a basic on-screen calculator in Quant.
  • Schools such as Harvard Business School, ISB, INSEAD and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX accept either test. Some LSE master's programmes accept only the GRE or prefer the GMAT.
  • There is no official score conversion table. ETS offers a comparison tool that gives a predicted GMAT score with a wide margin.

GMAT vs GRE: which test should you take?

Quick answer: Take whichever test your target programmes accept and you can score best on. If a school says "GMAT strongly preferred", take the GMAT. If you like data tables and logic puzzles, the GMAT may suit you. If you prefer vocabulary-based verbal work and want a calculator in Quant, try the GRE.

For single-test detail, see our GMAT guide and our GRE General Test guide.

How are the GMAT and GRE structured?

The GMAT exam has three 45-minute sections: Quant (21 questions), Verbal (23) and Data Insights (20). You choose the section order and may take one optional 10-minute break (mba.com exam structure).

GMAC's FAQ says the old 10th Edition was replaced by the "GMAT Exam (Focus Edition)" on 1 February 2024. Today mba.com mostly calls it the "GMAT exam": the same current test (mba.com FAQs).

The GRE starts with one 30-minute "Analyze an Issue" essay. Then come two Verbal sections (12 questions in 18 minutes, 15 in 23) and two Quant sections (12 in 21 minutes, 15 in 26). There is no break (ETS test structure).

Comparison table of GMAT and GRE sections, timing, scores and calculator rules GMAT vs GRE format at a glance.

The GMAT takes 2 h 15 min (21 Quant, 23 Verbal, 20 Data Insights); the GRE about 1 h 58 min (1 essay, 27 Verbal, 27 Quant). GMAT scores run 205-805; GRE Verbal and Quant are 130-170 each, and the essay is 0-6. The GMAT adapts question by question and has a calculator only in Data Insights; the GRE adapts by section and has one in Quant.

GRE vs GMAT difficulty: which is easier?

Neither test is officially "easier". The easier one is the one whose style matches how you think.

GMAT question types: Quant is all Problem Solving, with no calculator. Verbal mixes Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Data Insights has Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis, and it does give you a calculator (GMAT exam content).

GRE question types: Verbal has Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, so word knowledge matters more (ETS Verbal). Quant has Quantitative Comparison, multiple choice and Numeric Entry (ETS Quant).

In short: logic lovers often enjoy GMAT Critical Reasoning, and people with a wide vocabulary often like GRE Verbal. If you rely on a calculator, GMAT Quant may feel harder at first.

Worked example 1: a GMAT-style Problem Solving question

A shop raises the price of a jacket by 20%. Later it gives 25% off the new price. The final price is $54. What was the original price? (A) $50 (B) $54 (C) $60 (D) $64 (E) $72

Method:

  1. Let the original price be p.
  2. After a 20% rise, the price is 1.2p.
  3. After 25% off, the price is 0.75 × 1.2p = 0.9p.
  4. So 0.9p = 54, which gives p = 54 ÷ 0.9 = 60.
  5. Answer: (C) $60.

The trap is thinking "+20% then −25% is −5%". The real change is −10%. With no calculator, fractions help: 6/5 × 3/4 = 9/10.

Worked example 2: a GRE Quantitative Comparison question

x is a nonzero number. Quantity A: (x + 1)^2 Quantity B: x^2 + 1

Step-by-step animation solving a GRE Quantitative Comparison question with x nonzero Solving the Quantitative Comparison example step by step.

Expand Quantity A: (x + 1)^2 = x^2 + 2x + 1. Quantity B is x^2 + 1, so A − B = 2x. If x = 1, A is greater. If x = −1, B is greater. So the answer is D: the relationship cannot be determined.

The lesson: in Quantitative Comparison, test a positive and a negative value (and a fraction) before choosing A or B.

GMAT vs GRE score conversion: is there an official table?

No. GMAC and ETS do not publish a shared conversion table. ETS offers the GRE Comparison Tool for Business Schools. You enter GRE Verbal and Quant scores, and it gives a predicted GMAT Total, Verbal and Quant score.

ETS says the prediction may be off by about ±50 points on the Total and ±6 on Verbal and Quant. GMAC does not endorse the tool, and the page does not name the GMAT edition it maps to. Treat it as a rough guide only.

GMAT vs GRE fees, retakes and results

Table comparing GMAT and GRE fees, retake gaps, results timing and score validity Fees and rules for the GMAT and GRE.

GMAT: US$275 centre or US$300 online (US); 16-day retake gap; official scores in about 3-5 days. GRE: $249; 21-day retake gap; official scores in about 8-10 days. Both allow five attempts in 12 months, and both scores are valid for five years.

GMAT fees: On the mba.com payment page, the US and India price is US$275 at a test centre and US$300 online. In the UK it is £250 at a centre and £275 online. Prices vary by country, so check yours there.

GRE fees: From 1 August 2026, the GRE General Test costs $249 in all areas except China, where it is $237.86 (ETS fees). For India, ETS sends you to the ETS India website, so check the price there.

Retakes: You can retake the GMAT after 16 days, up to five times in a rolling 12 months (GMAT policies). You can retake the GRE once every 21 days, up to five times in a rolling 12 months.

Results: Both show unofficial scores on screen after the test (GRE Writing comes later). The GMAT Official Score Report usually arrives in 3-5 days, occasionally up to 20 (official score reports). GRE official scores arrive about 8-10 days after the test.

Choosing scores: With GMAT, you pick which programmes get your score after the test. With GRE ScoreSelect, you can send your most recent, all, or (after test day) any test dates.

Which schools accept the GMAT or GRE?

Always read your own programme's page. Five official pages say:

School / programme What the official page says
Harvard Business School MBA GRE or GMAT; "HBS has no preference" (HBS guide)
ISB PGP (India) GMAT or GRE, no preference; test-centre score, no older than five years (ISB)
IIM Ahmedabad MBA-PGPX GMAT/GRE within five years; online take-home scores not valid (IIMA)
INSEAD MBA GMAT or GRE, up to your deadline (INSEAD)
LSE master's Depends on programme: MSc Finance prefers GMAT; MSc Economics needs GRE (LSE)

For India, note that ISB and IIM Ahmedabad PGPX want test-centre scores. Two-year Indian MBAs use other exams: see our CAT 2026 guide, CAT vs XAT and NMAT guide. For UK plans, read how to get into LSE.

How do you decide? Four steps

Flow diagram of four steps to choose between the GMAT and GRE A four-step way to choose your test.

Check what each school accepts, take one official practice test of each, pick the format that suits you, then book a date that fits your deadlines.

  1. List your programmes and note what each accepts. "GRE required" or "GMAT strongly preferred" may decide it.
  2. Take one official practice test of each under timed conditions.
  3. Compare how it felt, not just the result. Which mistakes look easier to fix?
  4. Book a test date that leaves room for one retake (16 days for GMAT, 21 days for GRE) before your deadline.

If you are also weighing law school, read our LSAT guide and check each law school's page for the tests it takes.

How long should you study?

There is no official study time; it depends on your starting level, target and weekly hours. Start with a timed diagnostic, fix Quant basics (percentages, ratios, algebra, number properties), then practise each question type and full timed sections. If you have not done maths for years, plan extra time for basics.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Picking a test from a forum score table. No official conversion table exists.
  • Not checking each school's page. Some programmes prefer one test, and some reject online scores.
  • Leaning on a calculator. GMAT Quant has none, and ETS advises doing simple GRE sums in your head.
  • Booking too late to fit a retake before the deadline.

How 1-on-1 tutoring helps with GMAT and GRE Quant

  • One dedicated mentor, live online 1-on-1: plans follow your own test date and application rounds.
  • Method first: the mentor watches each step of your working, so traps like "+20% then −25%" get fixed at the root.
  • Personalised homework with feedback: practice sets target your weak question types, from Data Sufficiency to Quantitative Comparison. For Verbal and essays, the mentor helps with planning and method.
  • Every class recorded, with short progress updates: rewatch tricky methods, and start with a free demo class.
